You may remember last year when the X Factor winner’s inevitable terrible cover version of a debut was Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen (although the best version was definitely Jeff Buckley’s)? Well, some people got together and started a campaign asking people to buy the original version rather than the X Factor version, with the hope of preventing yet another X Factor Christmas number 1. Private Eye pointed out that both Sony Music Entertainment was not only the parent company of Syco, Simon Cowell’s company, but also owned the rights to the Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah, which the campaign was promoting in place of the X Factors… despite the fact that the money ended up in the same hands either way.
