Owners of a seaside hotel claim work to cover pink paintwork is being delayed, because officials want to approve the shade of white being used.
Conwy council ordered the Oasis Hotel on Llandudno’s seafront to repaint pink pillars and windows, after ruling the exterior did not meet guidelines.
A) Why are there guidelines regards the shade of white paint? It’s white. White is white.
B) what business is it of the council what colour a person paints their own property? The only possible reason I can think of is “To stop the building being ugly”. Not a good reason. If you have a business, I’m pretty sure that’s its own incentive to keep the place looking good to all the potential customers outside. In this case though, the owners didn’t get that memo.
C) This is just another example of a long line of the council playing silly buggers with these people over the most ludicrous things.
The pink hotel first fell foul of planning regulations in May 2008, when parts of the front of the hotel were painted a "vibrant, deep pink".
The move led to the issue being raised by Mostyn Estates, which hold the freehold for land on much of Llandudno’s promenade, and can stipulate how buildings are painted.
After almost a year long battle with Conwy council over the issue, the Planning Inspectorate for Wales rejected an appeal from the Blanchards, and ordered the bright pink colours be replaced with more muted tones.
But Mrs Blanchard claims some of that work has been further delayed, after further discussions with Conwy council planning officials.
"At first, we were told the gloss finish on the current paint would have to be replaced with a matt," she alleged.
"That would have required a lot of work, and finally we were told we could do it with a satin finish."
No wonder businesses have so much trouble taking off if this is the sort of utter nonsense they’re forced to put up with. How can it possibly be of interest to any level of government, local or otherwise, if you have matt or gloss? Seriously. There are some major control freaks out there.
Well yes, and it’s not unreasonable for a developer or a neighbourhood to agree to some binding “look and feel” for the neighbourhood.
But for a council to impose it top-down in a coercive fashion is just not on.
Aye, nothing wrong with self imposed rules on one’s on property.
Well, the council only has that power if it is a listed building. If it is listed it is so for a reason, although the council are being a bit ott in this case.
More importantly though, it was the freeholder who kicked off. It’s their property.
